Nine Indian schools plan to teach Russian

The annual two-day “Days of Russian Language, Literature & Culture”, jointly organised by the Russian Centre of Science and Culture and Institute of Russian Language, was held in a festive atmosphere on February 7 and 8, 2012.

An important highlight of the event was the announcement made by Ms. Renu Mittal, Director of D. P. S. Society that the Russian language will be included in the curriculum of nine schools in the Indian capital and its suburbs. Introduced into the programme from the fourth to eighth grade (age-group 8—11), the course will be jointly developed by D.P.S. Society, Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (Moscow), and the Representative office of ROSSOTRUDNICHESTVO in India.

ВIn May 2012, teachers of foreign languages of the D.P.S. Society will study the Russian language and methods of teaching under the guidance of teachers of the RCSC in New Delhi. During the year, the RCSC in New Delhi will also hold a series of promotional and informational meetings with school children on Russia, Russian-Indian relations and the advantages of learning Russian. Russian language students from D.P.S. Dwarka, D.P.S. Indirapuram, D.P.S. Mathura Road, Bluebells International School, Springdales School, Pusa Road, and the Institute of Russian Language, RCSC, took part in the programme.

In addition, the event was attended by representatives of four schools which are just planning to start teaching of the Russian language—D.P.S. Mathura Road, D.P.S. Noida, D.P.S. Greater Noida and D.P.S. Faridabad. In all, about 200 school and college students participated in the competition. Over 20 teachers from local schools and universities attended the event.

The programme of the two-day festival comprised Olympiads on the Russian language, literature and culture, art and essay competitions, film screening, and a seminar for teachers of Russian language “Learning to Teach”. At the opening ceremony, everyone could take part in “public celebrations”: folk dances and fun competitions, as well as having tea with Russian pastry, jam and honey. The days ended with the awards-giving ceremony and a concert by students of the Institute of Russian Language, RCSC.
